Organic vineyard growth in Bordeaux

Alexander Nelson Roberts

Bordeaux winemmakers have been converting to organic. Reports estimate that 6% of the world's vineyards are now certified, and converting to organic is part of wider sustainability plans.

The CIVB have said that more winieries are 'embracing' organic vineyards, as figures are increasing. Figures show that there was a 43% jump in the amount of vineyard land (certified organic or in conversion) to around 20,000 hectares. They also said 75% of Bordeaux's vineyard had a 'certified environmental approach' in 2020, up 55% from 2016.

CEO of biodynamically-farmed Chateau Palmer, Thomas Duroux, said it was fantastic news that ore produces are going organic and biodynamic in the region. Spain, France and Italy share three-quarters of the world's certified organic vineyards.
